Why Your Tankless Needs a Yearly Flush
Southern California has some of the hardest water in the country, and a tankless water heater is where that hard water does the most damage. Every gallon runs through a narrow heat exchanger at high temperature, and that is exactly where calcium and magnesium turn into scale. Water reports put Arcadia at about 12 grains per gallon, Burbank near 17, and Beverly Hills around 17. At those levels, scale starts building in the first year.
Scale doesn't shut a unit down all at once. First the hot water takes longer to arrive. Then the shower temperature swings, the flow feels weaker, and the unit gets louder. Eventually it throws a scale or overheat code and stops firing. By then the heat exchanger has been working too hot for a long time.
The manufacturers know this. Rinnai's warranty lists scale buildup from skipped maintenance as something it doesn't cover, and Navien recommends maintenance every year, more often with hard water. A yearly flush is the cheapest protection you can buy for a unit that cost thousands to install.
More Ways We Can Help
Have a tank water heater too, or need a replacement fast? We repair and replace gas and electric tank water heaters, with same-day replacement on most standard sizes. We carry Bradford White and other trusted brands.
The best way to fight scale is to stop it before it reaches the heater. A water softener protects your tankless, your fixtures, and your appliances, and it can stretch the time between flushes. Most systems can be installed the same day.
Already seeing an error code, cold water, or a unit that won't fire? We diagnose and repair Navien, Rinnai, Noritz, Rheem, and other tankless brands, and most repairs are finished on the first visit.
Brands We Flush & Service
We flush and service Navien, Rinnai, Noritz, Rheem, Bosch, Takagi, and State tankless water heaters. Each brand has its own flushing steps, filters, and screens, and we follow the manufacturer's procedure for your model. Condensing units like Navien also get their condensate line and neutralizer checked, because a clogged condensate drain is one of the most common reasons a tankless shuts down.
Thinking about replacing an older unit instead? See our tankless water heater installation page.
What To Expect
A maintenance visit usually takes an hour to an hour and a half. We shut off the gas and water, connect a circulation pump to your unit's service valves, and run descaling solution through the heat exchanger. While it circulates, we clean the inlet water filter, check the burner and flame rod, and pull the unit's error code history. Then we flush it with clean water, bring it back online, and check the temperature at a faucet.
Every visit also includes a safety inspection. We check the gas connection and venting, make sure the pressure relief valve is working, measure your home's water pressure, and test your water hardness. High pressure and hard water are the two things that wear out a water heater fastest, so if either one is off, we'll show you the numbers and explain your options, like a pressure regulator, an expansion tank, or a water softener. You get a quick rundown of everything we found and when your next flush is due.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Once a year for most homes in Southern California. In very hard water areas or busy households, every six months is better. If you have a water softener, you can usually go longer between flushes.
-
Hot water takes longer to arrive, the temperature swings in the middle of a shower, the flow feels weaker, the unit is louder than it used to be, or it shows a scale or overheating error code. If it has been more than a year, it's due either way.
-
It can. Rinnai's warranty lists scale buildup from improper maintenance as not covered, and Navien says skipping the maintenance in the owner's manual may void its warranty. Keeping a record of yearly flushes protects you if you ever need a warranty claim.
-
If you're handy and your unit has service valves, yes. The owner's manual walks through it. Most homeowners call us because they don't have the pump and descaling setup, the unit has no service valves, or they want the burner, venting, and gas pressure checked during the same visit.
-
It just means it wasn't installed with maintenance in mind. We can add isolation service valves during the first visit, and every flush after that is faster and simpler.
-
Yes, but less often. A softener removes most of the hardness that causes scale, so many homes with a working softener can go two years or more between flushes. We still recommend checking the filter and the unit once a year.
-
Yes. We flush and service tankless water heaters from every major brand, no matter who installed them.
