Signs Your Main Sewer Line Is Clogged
Every drain in your house runs into one pipe: the main sewer line. When a single sink is slow, that's a clog in that sink's drain. When you flush the toilet and water comes up in the shower or bathtub, that's different. Water is trying to leave the house, hitting a blockage further down the line, and coming back up at the lowest drain it can find.
Other signs point the same way: gurgling from a toilet or tub when another fixture drains, several slow drains at once, water coming out of the cleanout in the yard, or a sewage smell inside or outside the house. If you're seeing any of these, stop running water and flushing until the line is cleared. Every gallon you send down has nowhere to go but back up into the house.
In older Los Angeles neighborhoods, the usual causes are tree roots growing into clay pipe joints, grease and wipes building up over time, and sections of pipe that have sagged or shifted. Homes built roughly between 1945 and 1972 may also have Orangeburg pipe, a tar-and-paper sewer pipe that deforms and collapses with age.
More Ways We Can Help
If the camera shows broken pipe, heavy root damage, or a collapsed section, clearing it again won't last. We offer spot repairs, full replacements, and trenchless options that keep your yard and driveway intact.
Leaking water lines, old galvanized pipe, or low water pressure throughout the house? We repair pipe leaks, replace failing sections, and repipe whole homes when the old plumbing is past saving.
Water heaters are our core work. We repair and replace tank and tankless water heaters across Greater Los Angeles, with same-day replacement on most standard sizes.
What We Bring to a Main Line Call
Main line work takes the right equipment. We clear lines with a cable machine and root-cutting heads, use hydrojetting to scour out grease and buildup that cabling leaves behind, and run a sewer camera with a locator so we can see the inside of the pipe and mark exactly where and how deep a problem is. Most lines are cleared through the outdoor cleanout. If your home doesn't have an accessible cleanout, we can clear the line through a toilet and talk to you about adding one so the next call is faster.
If the camera finds damage that clearing won't fix, see our sewer line repair and replacement page for your options.
What To Expect
When you call, we'll ask a few quick questions to confirm it's the main line and get someone out as fast as possible, usually the same day. On site, we find the cleanout, clear the blockage, and get your drains flowing again. Then we run the camera through the line so you can see the inside of your pipe on screen: roots, grease, a belly where water sits, or cracked and broken sections.
If it was a simple clog, you're done. If the camera shows roots or damage that will bring the clog back, we'll show you the footage, explain what it means, and give you clear options, from regular maintenance jetting to a spot repair or replacement. No pressure and no guessing. If you're in the City of Los Angeles, you may also qualify for LA Sanitation rebates on sewer lateral video inspections and repairs while funds last.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
If only one sink or tub is slow, it's usually that drain. If flushing a toilet makes water come up in a shower or tub, or several drains are slow at once, especially on the lowest floor, it's almost always the main line.
-
Stop flushing and running water, including the washing machine and dishwasher. Don't pour chemical drain cleaner into a backed-up line. It rarely reaches a main line clog, and it makes the job more dangerous for whoever opens the line.
-
We recommend it on every main line call. Clearing the line gets water flowing again, but the camera is what tells you why it clogged and whether it's going to happen again.
-
They do different jobs. A cable machine punches through a blockage and cuts roots. Hydrojetting uses high-pressure water to scour grease, scale, and root debris off the pipe walls, so the line stays clear longer. Many lines get both.
-
We can usually clear the line by pulling a toilet. If you don't have an accessible cleanout, we'll recommend adding one, which makes every future call faster and cheaper.
-
In the City of Los Angeles and in areas maintained by LA County, the homeowner is responsible for the entire sewer lateral, from the house all the way to the city main, even the part under the street. Other cities may draw the line differently, so it's worth checking with yours.
-
Repeat clogs usually mean something in the pipe is catching waste, like roots coming through joints, a sagging section that holds water, or a cracked or offset pipe. A camera inspection shows which one, and that tells you whether maintenance jetting or a repair is the real fix.
