Why Your Water Heater Needs an Expansion Tank
Water expands when it's heated. A 50-gallon tank heating from 60 to 120 degrees grows by about half a gallon every cycle. In an open system, that extra water pushes back out to the street. But if your home has a pressure regulator or a check valve on the main line, which most Southern California homes do, the water has nowhere to go, and pressure spikes every time your water heater runs.
Those spikes are what make a water heater's relief valve drip, wear out faucet cartridges and toilet fill valves, and put stress on the tank itself. The California Plumbing Code calls for an expansion tank downstream of a pressure regulator, and inspectors typically look for one when a water heater is replaced.
An expansion tank is a small tank with an air cushion inside that absorbs the extra water. They don't last forever either. When the internal bladder fails, the tank fills with water and stops working, and the pressure spikes come back. A quick check tells us if yours is still doing its job.
More Ways We Can Help
Ready to stop flushing a tank and get endless hot water? We install Navien, Rinnai, and Noritz tankless units sized to your home, and many homeowners qualify for SoCal Gas rebates on the switch.
The best way to cut down on sediment is to stop hard water before it reaches the heater. A water softener protects your water heater, your fixtures, and your appliances. Most systems can be installed the same day.
No hot water, a pilot that won't stay lit, or a tank that's already leaking? We repair and replace gas and electric tank water heaters, with same-day replacement on most standard sizes.
Expansion Tanks We Install
We install potable-water expansion tanks from Watts, Amtrol, and State, sized to your water heater and your home's pressure, pre-charged to match your regulator setting, and supported so the weight isn't hanging on the piping.
Water pressure running high too? See our pressure regulator (PRV) page.
What To Expect
We start by measuring your water pressure and checking for a pressure regulator or check valve. If your existing expansion tank is waterlogged, we'll show you. Then we size the new tank, set its air charge to match your home's pressure, and install it on the cold-water line at the water heater with a proper support strap or bracket. Most installs take about an hour.
Every visit also includes a safety inspection of the water heater: the relief valve, venting and draft, the gas connection, earthquake straps, and drain pan, plus a water pressure and hardness test. If anything else is off, we'll show you the numbers and explain your options before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
If your home has a pressure regulator or a check valve on the main line, almost certainly yes. The California Plumbing Code calls for one downstream of a pressure regulator, and inspectors typically look for one when a water heater is replaced.
-
The most common causes are thermal expansion with no working expansion tank, or water pressure that’s too high. Sometimes the valve itself is worn. We test the pressure and the tank to find the real cause before replacing anything.
-
Tap it. A good tank sounds hollow near the top. A failed one sounds solid all the way up because it’s full of water. Water coming out of the air valve on top is another sign the bladder has failed.
-
Usually around 5 to 10 years, depending on your water pressure and water quality. We check it at every water heater visit.
-
Tankless units hold very little water, so thermal expansion is much smaller, but some manufacturers and local inspectors still call for one in closed systems. We check what your unit and your city require.
-
It depends on the size of your water heater and your home’s water pressure. Most 40- to 50-gallon tanks use a 2-gallon expansion tank at normal pressure, and larger tanks or higher pressure call for a bigger one. We size it on site.
-
Yes. We install and replace expansion tanks on any brand of tank water heater, gas or electric, no matter who installed it.
