Why San Gabriel Valley Water Is Hard on Water Heaters
Much of the San Gabriel Valley drinks local groundwater, and it's some of the hardest water in Los Angeles County. Arcadia's 2024 water quality report shows an average of 210 mg/L of hardness, about 12 grains per gallon, with some sources as high as 340 mg/L, close to 20 grains. Neighboring cities that pump from the same groundwater basins deal with similar hard water, and every one of those minerals ends up inside your water heater.
In a tank water heater, those minerals settle on the bottom as sediment, right on top of the burner. That's the popping and rumbling sound, and it overheats the bottom of the tank until it cracks and leaks. In a tankless unit, the same minerals build up as scale inside the heat exchanger, which leads to error codes, temperature swings, and a heat exchanger that fails years early.
At these hardness levels, a water heater that's never been flushed or descaled can lose years of life. A yearly flush or descale and a safety inspection costs a fraction of a new unit, and it's the difference between a water heater that lasts eight years and one that lasts twelve or more.
More Ways We Can Help
Ready to stop flushing a tank and get endless hot water? We install Navien, Rinnai, and Noritz tankless units sized to your home, and many homeowners qualify for SoCal Gas rebates on the switch.
The best way to cut down on sediment is to stop hard water before it reaches the heater. A water softener protects your water heater, your fixtures, and your appliances. Most systems can be installed the same day.
No hot water, a pilot that won't stay lit, or a tank that's already leaking? We repair and replace gas and electric tank water heaters, with same-day replacement on most standard sizes.
Tank & Tankless Brands We Service
We flush and service Bradford White, Rheem, A.O. Smith, and State tank water heaters, and descale Navien, Rinnai, and Noritz tankless units, gas or electric, no matter who installed them.

What To Expect
A maintenance visit usually takes about an hour. On a tank water heater, we turn the burner down, flush the sediment out of the bottom of the tank until the water runs clear, pull and inspect the anode rod, and test the temperature and pressure relief valve. On a tankless unit, we close the service valves, circulate a descaling solution through the heat exchanger, clean the inlet filter, and check the error history, venting, and condensate line.
Every visit also includes a safety inspection. We check the venting and draft so exhaust leaves the house the way it should, look over the gas connection, earthquake straps, and drain pan, measure your home's water pressure, and test your water hardness. High pressure and hard water are the two things that wear out a water heater fastest, so if either one is off, we'll show you the numbers and explain your options, like a pressure regulator, an expansion tank, or a water softener. You get a quick rundown of everything we found before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Once a year for both tank and tankless water heaters, and with the valley’s hard groundwater, some homes benefit from every six to twelve months. If you have a water softener, every two years is usually enough. We test your water at every visit and recommend a schedule based on your numbers.
-
Almost always sediment. Water trapped under the mineral layer at the bottom of the tank boils and pops when the burner fires. A flush often quiets it down. If the noise has gone on for years, some of that sediment may be too hardened to fully clear.
-
It's a metal rod inside the tank that corrodes on purpose so the steel tank doesn't. In hard water it's often used up within a few years. We pull and check it at every maintenance visit and replace it when it's worn down.
-
Usually, as long as it isn't leaking. On a tank over ten years old that has never been flushed, we check the drain valve and the tank's condition first and give you an honest opinion on whether maintenance or replacement makes more sense.
-
Venting and draft, the gas connection, the temperature and pressure relief valve, earthquake straps, the drain pan, your home's water pressure, and your water hardness. Those last two are the biggest factors in how long a water heater lasts.
-
If your home has a pressure regulator or a check valve on the main line, heated water has nowhere to expand, and pressure spikes every time the burner runs. Most of these homes need an expansion tank, and code typically requires one when a water heater is replaced. We test your pressure and let you know.
-
Yes. We flush and service every major brand of tank and tankless water heater, gas or electric, no matter who installed it.
